2017 Design Conference

The 2017 Design Conference is SOLD OUT. 

Our Sixth Annual Design Conference will explore the theme of “Clarity” in design. The conference will be held in Marfa, where high desert skies, light, and landscape define a clarity of place, one which remains remote and alluring to many contemporary artists, architects, and patrons alike.


February 24–26, 2017


Presenters at the 2017 Design Conference will include:

  • Carlos Jiménez, ​Carlos Jiménez Studio (Houston)
  • Rick Joy, FAIA, Rick Joy Architects (Tucson, Arizona)
  • Christine Ten Eyck, PLA, FASLA, Ten Eyck Landscape Architects (Austin)

Individual presentations by these three distinguished designers and a panel discussion moderated by Mark T. Wellen, FAIA, on Sunday will tie their work and ideas to the conference theme. The event will also include one group tour, group meals, receptions, and options for additional independent sights, tours, or time to explore Marfa.

*Meet at Hotel Saint George by 8:15 am to caravan to Marathon, then Cinco Camp. The road to the Camp is over very rough terrain. If you have a vehicle with high clearance and good tires for rocky travel (four-wheel drive is not mandatory), you may meet in Marfa at 8:15 or Marathon (across from the Gage Hotel) at 9:15 to follow the group to Cinco Camp. Off-road vehicles will be provided by Rhotenberry Wellen Architects and available from Marathon for the first 13 people who sign up. When signing up for this tour, please designate if you will need off-road transportation or be providing your own vehicle. The tour group number is not limited. However, the number of seats in vehicles provided by RWA is limited to 13.



The 2017 Design Conference is sold out. Individuals have been contacted about any spaces made available through the waitlist, and we are no longer accepting registrations for this event.
