Advocates for Architecture Day 2013

Key Issues

In the 83rd Regular Legislative Session, we expect challenges relating to:

  • Qualifications Based Selection (QBS)
  • Local school design
  • The Public-Private Partnership (P3) bill which was passed last session and will be amended during this session

The overarching issue, however, is to create an awareness among legislators that good architectural design positively impacts state resources (water, energy, revenue/expenses), as well as the health, safety, and welfare (HSW) of all Texans. Help us make a difference!

Why Participate?

In a few days, the Texas Legislature will convene for its biannual session, during which it will write new laws and amend existing laws for the State. There are more new legislators in the State House than ever before; fully 50% of the House members have served one legislative term or less. These new legislators must either know enough about the topics/industries at stake to make informed decisions — or relying solely on information provided by lobbyists.

Most legislators truly want to be better informed, and constituents play a large role in that. Each industry works to build relationships with legislators and establish local contacts to that end. So it is with architectural interests: the relationship that you, as a constituent, establish with a legislator, as well as the local information you can provide about the difference that good architectural planning/design makes in the life of your community, matters a great deal.

We would like for EVERY state senator and state representative to have a visit from a local architect! Your participation is especially valuable if you live in a smaller city or rural area of the state — AND it’s especially valuable if you live in a densely populated metropolitan area.

Help us establish good lines of communication and convey the importance of architectural design for urban planning, state or municipal buildings, and healthy communities.

About Advocates for Architecture Day

Advocates for Architecture Day is a special event hosted by the Texas Society of Architects. Architects from across the state converge on the Texas Capitol to meet with legislators to promote the importance of our profession. This year, Advocates for Architecture Day will take place on January 29. Participants will meet in the morning to receive special training on key issues and messages we wish to share with legislators, as well as tips for conducting successful visits. Legislative meetings will happen in the afternoon. Register today.
