PubCom Travels To Tyler

Last weekend, the Texas Society of Architects Publications Committee gathered in Tyler for its annual "PubCom" Retreat. Past retreat destinations have revealed a unique architectural presence from earlier times, and Tyler, with its abundance of fine architecture and really talented architects, was no exception. Retreat tours have often focused on mid-century modern residential and commercial architecture, and there is plenty to be had in Tyler — so much in fact, that a group called The Mod Squad was recently created specifically to promote awareness of the wealth of the city’s modern architectural heritage. The "star architect" of this retreat turned out…

Radiating Pattern Exhibit Transforms Rice Gallery

Rice Gallery, on the campus of Rice University, invites artists and architects to create site-specific installations in their simple and well-proportioned space. Currently, the Swedish artist Gunilla Klingberg explores her interests in everyday consumerism and Eastern spirituality by focusing on the gallery floor plane with an intricate and compelling pattern made of supermarket, fast food, big box store and common household logos in an ornate form that recalls a sacred mandala. Klingberg’s beautifully complex mandala is forceful; it pushes through the limits of the front gallery glass wall, into the foyer, and up the exterior façade, blurring the separations of…

VIDEO: 20×20 With Brantley Hightower, AIA

"As cool as architecture may be, space flight is in fact much, much cooler."   Still, says Hightower, the process of designing a spacecraft and the process of designing a building are not that different. The full list of presenters included: Elaine Bradford / Houston Artist Michael Ray Charles / Austin Artist Brantley Hightower,…

VIDEO: 20×20 with Elizabeth Price, AIA

"Working in a small town means you live with your projects," says Elizabeth Price, AIA. There are wonderful benefits to this — such as being able to have her daughter attend a preschool her team designed, and staying connected with projects and clients — but there are also some interesting challenges. Read: "Not very many boundaries." Watch Price discuss these topics in a PechaKucha she presented as part of 20X20@500 Chicon. 20×20@500 Chicon was hosted by the Texas Society of Architects last fall as part of our 2012 Convention and Design Expo. “What Does Architecture Do?”

“I’m interested in what architecture is, but I’m way more interested in the power of architecture to do something and make a difference in the world.” With these words, incoming Texas Society of Architects President Larry Speck, FAIA, concluded the Society’s first-ever PechaKucha night. The event, which took place on October 18 as part of our 73rd Annual Convention and Design Expo, featured a series of diverse, energizing PechaKucha presentations by nine Texas design professionals on what inspires them. PechaKucha 20×20 is a trademarked presentation style devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo’s Klein Dytham architecture. Presenters show…

Hospitality events will be held in a number of landmark Dallas buildings, and there will be plenty of time for conversation and socializing. Hotel arrangements are being finalized and…
