Darren Heine, AIA, with his wife, Dayna -courtesy Darren Heine Where did you grow up?  I grew up on a farm/ranch in San Gabriel, Texas. Thomas McKittrick, FAIA: 1934–2013

In deed and in practice, I knew Tom McKittrick, a good man, a good architect, and a good teacher. When we lost Tom McKittrick, we lost some of the best of ourselves. His teaching career began after he developed a very successful architectural practice, which was headquartered in Houston. Tom made significant contributions in education and teaching. His initial BArch education was at Rice, and major contributions in practice were initiated in Houston. After a very successful career in architectural practice, Tom took his advanced degree from Texas A&M University and on completion, chose to teach Architecture at Texas A&M until his retirement. He…

Architect Profile: Derwin Broughton, AIA

Congratulations on the AIA 2013 Young Architects Award. How does it feel to be honored in this way? It is an extreme honor to be selected as a recipient of this award – and I don’t take it lightly.  For a farm boy from small town in South Carolina, it is exciting while also humbling. But with honor and recognition comes great responsibility – responsibility to not settle but to continue to strive for causes larger than me. How do you think architecture can transform a community? I have seen how a successful project can change the mindset of a community, especially in impoverished…

Society Unveils New Academic Member Designation

Letter from Texas Architects President Larry Speck, FAIA to the Academic Community Dear Colleagues, As president of the Texas Society of Architects, I wanted to inform you of a new program we've developed, one created specifically to involve the architectural educators of Texas in our ongoing efforts to promote and support Texas architecture. For many years now, the American Institute of Architects has defined anyone possessing a professional degree in architecture that does not also possess an architectural license as an "Associate." Often an "Associate" is assumed to be someone who is on the track of gaining licensure, but has…
