Houston's METALAB has been chosen as the winner of AIA San Antonio's river barge design competition.
AIA San Antonio announced the winner of its river barge design competition on Friday. Houston’s METALAB created the winning design, a barge inspired by papel picado with various deck components to accommodate different uses.
When announcing the winner of the contest, which launched in 2015 and resulted in proposals from 12 teams, Mayor of San Antonio Ivy R. Taylor stated, “METALAB’s winning design is bold, innovative, and reflects the character of our progressive and growing city.”
All three finalist teams will receive a cash prize. In addition to the prize, METALAB will be recommended to the city council and continue in the process to construct its design for 2018. METALAB will build a test barge to be in operation in early 2017.
