Turn Up the Volume!

The stage lights were warm and welcoming, not at all the petrifying event conjured in my subconscious. The butterflies and wobbly knees were not present as I ascended the stage steps to address the standing-room only crowd of 1400 colleagues gathered from across the breadth of our state’s boundaries. Catherine Gavin, Editor, Texas Architect The Texas Society of Architects has welcomed Catherine Gavin to Austin as editor of its magazine, Texas Architect, effective with the January/February issue. She follows the four-issue
guest editorship of Larry Paul Fuller, which commenced with the departure of previous editor
Stephen Sharpe at the end of February.
 Gavin had been a historic preservation consultant in New York City since 2004. Her projects
included work on the New York Public Library, Carnegie Hall, and the United Nations
Headquarters, as well as the rehabilitation and restoration of numerous residential and
commercial developments in historic districts throughout the city.

Introducing 2013 President Larry Speck, FAIA

Larry Speck, FAIA, has gained considerable national and international recognition for his work as an architect, an architectural critic, an academic and a teacher. His professional work includes such Texas landmarks as Austin Bergstrom International Airport, Austin Convention Center (both phases), and the architecture for Discovery Green, a twelve-acre park in downtown Houston. Over the last 25 years, his design work has won 33 national design awards, 21 state or regional design awards, and 63 local design awards. Design Conference Set for Dallas February 22-24

The conference will feature as keynote speakers architects Marion Weiss, FAIA, and Michael Manfredi, FAIA, of Weiss Manfredi Architects in New York. As the program expands in the weeks to come, arrangements are expected to be finalized with another prominent architect and architectural historian who will also be speaking. As at the Midland conference, building tours — including a number of significant private residences — will be part of the activities.
