Architizer’s 2nd Annual A+ Awards: Call for Entries

The A+ Awards give Texas architects a unique opportunity to be seen and recognized on a global scale. With more than 1,500 entries from 100+ countries, the A+ Awards represents the world’s biggest architecture awards program. Architizer has teamed up with partners the Wall Street Journal and the Webbys to help break architecture out of the echo chamber, reaching an audience of 80 million, including 200,000 public votes. AIA Houston Design Awards

A panel of three internationally recognized architects met at Architecture Center Houston and selected 16 projects in six categories among the 122 entries. Fire|Beach House

Sited on a sprawling lot on Cessna Road right next to Galveston’s Scholes International Airport, and surrounded by not much besides sandburs, the sea breeze, and the wide expanse of the airstrip, Fire Station 4 is a surprising piece of contemporary architecture. Designed by the Dallas office of the international firm HDR Architecture, the rectilinear, two-story building stands out on the flat landscape with a tripartite design composed of a translucent, polycarbonate base, a metal-and-wood-clad top, and an offset concrete tower linking the two.  “When we were selected for this project, I knew that we had an opportunity to design…

AIA Austin 2013 Design Awards

HONOR  Hillside Residence Alterstudio Architecture A 1927 Austin bungalow was rescued from dilapidation through a substantial renovation and expansion. The building was delineated abstractly in stark white and paired with a new volume clad in black-stained cypress. The two are connected via a glass entry bridge. The renovation respects the original structure’s character, maintaining its inward focus; the expansion, by contrast, is characterized by openness, spatial continuity, and abstraction. AIA El Paso Design Awards

The following three projects received Honor Awards. El Paso County Family Youth and Services Center Wright & Dalbin Archtiects, Inc. The 21,000-sf building houses county, state, and community-based departments and organizations that assess the psychiatric, medical, general hygiene, and dental needs of underage clients and their families. A central atrium unifies the offices of the various disciplines. Bright colors on the facades and throughout the interior spaces provide a defiant alternative to traditional finishes in community clinics. AIA Fort Worth Student Design Awards

The lone Honor Award was presented to Ace Academy by John Paul Rysavy and Daniel Shumaker, both students at the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, two Merit Awards were presented, one to Down Town Urban Architecture by Yan Lu of Texas A&M University and another to Estuarial Habitation by John Paul Rysavy of the University of Texas at Austin. The chapter’s Student Design Award was established in 1991, with eligibility open to students enrolled in NAAB accredited architecture programs in Texas.
