Rethinking Historic Buildings through a Green Lens
Speaker: Barbara Campagna, FAIA, LEED AP, Barbara A. Campagna/Architecture + Planning, PLLC
October 18, 8:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
The construction and operation of buildings accounts for almost 50% of the United States greenhouse gas emissions. But reusing and retrofitting our existing buildings can reduce these emissions dramatically. Reusing what we have – buildings, landscapes, communities – is the best way to make the biggest impact in controlling climate change. Historic preservation approaches are just sound, common-sense methods for protecting the resources, culture and heritage of our planet and that is inherently sustainable development. In this workshop, Campagna will share her experience and work developing national sustainability policies, integrating cultural and preservation metrics into the LEED rating systems, and discussing past and current sustainable preservation projects.

America is undergoing a seismic demographic shift, and families and individuals are expected to shoulder much responsibility with little coordinated help. But designers and planners can think ahead, not only planning safer households, but adapted communities and neighborhoods. Former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros and Jane Hickie of the Stanford Center on Longevity will share some key insights about how to get this started.
