Wilson Announces Candidacy

Bill T. Wilson II, FAIA, is a candidate in the Republican primary for Texas House District 43. If elected, Wilson will be the first practicing architect to serve in the Texas Legislature in twenty-eight years. Pundits have labeled this one of the year’s five most interesting GOP primary races in Texas because of the defection of the incumbent representative from the Democratic to Republican Party.

The district boundaries were redrawn for this election, however, the voters in the district, which includes the four counties surrounding Corpus Christi and Nueces County, have previously shown an independence of political maneuvering. This is expected to be one of the most expensive battlegrounds in the House races in 2012 and significant donations and endorsements are being offered by Texans for Lawsuit Reform, the biggest spending political organization in Texas for the past decade, and by the competing trial lawyer counterpart, the Texans for Insurance Reform. A third candidate who is a former mayor of a community within the district is also running for the position.

Though this is Wilson’s first attempt at political office, he has been a long-time participant in the Texas Society of Architects (Texas Architects) Government Affairs and Advocacy efforts, has served as Texas Architects president, and is currently the Senior Director from Texas to the National Board of the AIA. He is well-known throughout his district for his public architectural work as well as his community involvement. He is also respected and known for his fairness, his research and understanding of the issues, his humility, and his willingness to listen to others.

The primary election is on May 29, 2012.
