TxA 2013 Studio Awards Announced

2013 TEX-FAB Finalists Announced
This week, TEX-FAB *Digital Fabrication Alliance, a nonprofit connecting design professionals, academics, and manufacturers interested in using digital technology to explore new industry relationships, announced the finalists of its 2013 competition, “SKIN.” Four proposals were selected to move on to the next round. The eventual winner will be built at full scale through TEX-FAB's fabrication partnership with ZAHNER. The winning design will then be exhibited at the next TEX-FAB conference.
Waller Creek’s Creek Show
Creek Show proposes to transform Austin’s Waller Creek into an active venue for art, architecture, and landscape architecture. A series of temporary installations will appear along the 1.5-mile site in an attempt to surprise and delight the community.
AIA Austin 2013 Design Awards
In April, AIA Austin announced the recipients of its 2013 Design Awards. The competition recognizes outstanding architectural projects by members and promotes public interest in architectural excellence. This year's jury included Craig Kolstad, Assoc. AIA, of Dallas; Lauren Rottet, FAIA, of Houston; and Teresa Rosano, AIA, of Tucson, Ariz.

RE:site and METALAB, two Houston-based firms of artists, designers, and architects, recently installed “Memory Cloud,” a light-based an installation that creatively embodies campus life, at the Texas A&M University Memorial Student Center.
Daylighting Design Process: Two Cases
Daylighting was a primary design driver in two recent Austin projects: the plans for the upcoming Central Library by the joint venture of Lake|Flato Architects and Shepley Bulfinch, and the McGarrah Jessee office renovation by McKinney York Architects. Richter, currently a member of the AIA National Board of Directors, is CEO of Richter Architects in Corpus Christi and a past president of the Society.

Conference Focuses on Sustainable Building Strategies
The Gulf Coast Green Symposium and Expo, presented annually by AIA Houston, is the leading green building conference in the region. This year's symposium took place on May 2. TxA Historic Resources Committee member Alexis McKinney, AIA, of Houston, presented at the conference and reports on the sustainable strategies explored by the event's keynote speakers: Barbara Campagna, FAIA, Ellen Dunham-Jones, AIA, and Annie Leonard.
