The core is a starting point for any small house edited to its essentials, but the Rice Building Workshop projects have explored how the core is also the heart of new housing, serving as a pacemaker in renovated houses, as well as a quick "defibrillation' response during emergency situations. The project 'Extra Small (XS) House' re-imagines the typical row house typology in more contemporary terms; 'New Core/Old House' promotes the re-use of abandoned housing stock by the insertion of new services contained in a compact cube built in situ; 'Zero House' translates the row house into a sustainable and modern prototype using active technologies; 'Inhouse/Outhouse' focuses on the core as a deliverable system that is prefabricated off-site then transported and inserted into existing or new house projects; and 'Emergency Core' is a highly edited version of essential elements that may be deployed following a natural disaster.
