The much-maligned Postmodern movement had its roots in bringing back ideas of meaning, context, and visual language to architecture. What started out as an intellectual exercise to codify the language of architecture soon morphed into a "style" that was widely (and often poorly) adapted to a variety of building types. By the mid 1980's it had become a predominant means of architectural expression, but was ultimately supplanted by a return to architectural modernism. Remnant buildings of this period remain, often in commercial buildings, but also in a few exceptional buildings, many of which have held up well and deserve more study, evaluation, and recognition.
