By the middle of the 20th Century the majority of current Texas county courthouses had been constructed, and in the second half of the 20th Century, with a few notable exceptions, courthouse design was limited to alterations and additions. Then, as the 21st Century began, a two-fold revival of courthouse design began in Texas, first emphasizing preservation and restoration of historic courthouses, and secondly the designing of new, free-standing courthouses and so-called Justice Centers. This presentation will address the role that architects have played in the last 50 years in transforming existing courthouses through preserving and updating historic buildings, and transforming a significant civic building type through renewal in a manner that acknowledges the rapidly changing conditions in urban and suburban Texas counties.
