AIA Announces 2014 Fellows — 21 Texas Architects Named

The American Institute of Architects has announced the newest members of the AIA College of Fellows. Among the 139 members elevated to Fellowship in 2014, 21 are from the state of Texas. Congratulations to all the recipients of this prestigious honor. Only about 3,000 of AIA's total 80,000 members hold this distinction.

This past November, Texas Society of Architects members elected nominees for 2014 leadership during the Society's Annual Business Session in Fort Worth. Val Glitsch, FAIA, of Houston was elected 2014 president; Michael Malone, AIA, of Dallas was voted president-elect.

LEED Platinum for Bush Presidential Center

The George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas is the first presidential library to earn Platinum certification for new construction from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). While the center's architectural design may be controversial, its commitment to sustainability is not.

AIA Fort Worth 2011 Design Awards

Conference Emphasizes Practice in the Hinterlands

For two days in February, a group of designers gathered in Midland to consider the challenges of producing top-flight architecture in a place far removed from the state’s larger urban areas. The event, dubbed “Architecture in the Hinterlands,” included an address by acclaimed Canadian architect Brian MacKay-Lyons that featured his work in remote Nova Scotia.

Genius sometimes strikes quickly. According to one of those quintessential Texas stories, architect Harwood Taylor designed his residential masterpiece for childhood friend David Frame and his wife Gloria during a flight from Midland to Houston in Frame’s private plane in 1958.
