The historic preservation community is saddened to announce the passing of our dear, dear friend and teacher Gene George. W. Eugene George, FAIA, died peacefully at his home in Austin, with his wife Mary Carolyn by his side, on January 16 after a short illness.
He was the teacher of scores of architecture students at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture and the Architectural Engineering Department over the many years he served on the faculty there. In 1997 he was the first recipient of the professorship established by the San Antonio Conservation Society at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he inaugurated its first graduate program in Historic Preservation.
Gene remained a good friend and mentor to so many of us, actively interested in our lives and our accomplishments. A good group of us proudly gathered to watch him receive a Presidential Citation from the Texas Society of Architects at is Annual Convention this past October in Austin. A memorial celebration of Gene’s life has been scheduled for February 16 at 4:00 p.m., at All Saints Episcopal Church, 209 W. 27th Street in Austin.
We will miss him, his friendship and support, but we carry the wisdom, the generosity and the high professional standards he passed on to us by his example, forever in our hearts and minds.
